Anthropic has just launched Claude Fable 5, its first Mythos-class model that’s safe for general use, alongside Claude Mythos 5 for highly restricted partners. Fable 5 is built on the same foundation as Mythos but wrapped in strong guardrails so enterprises can tap frontier performance without opening the door to high-risk misuse.
Fable 5 is designed for long-running, autonomous work: complex coding, multi-day knowledge tasks, and workflows where the model needs to plan, delegate, and self-check its own output. Anthropic and early users report state-of-the-art results across software engineering, analytics, vision, and long-context reasoning, with a noticeable gap over previous Claude models on harder, multi-step problems.
The interesting twist is safety. In areas like cybersecurity, biology, and chemistry, Fable 5 simply refuses high-risk requests and falls back to Claude Opus 4.8 instead, effectively giving you two models in one experience: a Mythos-class system for most work, and a safer fallback when you cross sensitive lines. Anthropic is also using Mythos 5 in tightly controlled programs (like Project Glasswing) with government and critical-infrastructure partners, where those same capabilities run without public guardrails under strict oversight.
From a practical standpoint, Fable 5 is already available through the Claude API and major cloud platforms, with pricing set at around $10 per million input tokens and $50 per million output tokens, matching Mythos 5 and bringing Mythos-level performance into a range many teams can justify for serious projects.
